The Secret Service failed to adequately protect President John F. Kennedy 30 years ago -- leaving Kennedy to ride in an open limousine into an ambush on a downtown Dallas street, congressional investigations showed.
After Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, and nightclub operator Jack Ruby murdered suspect Lee Harvey Oswald two days later, the FBI and other federal agencies sought to hide their tracks with a cover-up, investigations found.
When Ruby shot Oswald while in Dallas police custody, he silenced forever the one person who could have revealed whether Oswald acted alone or was part of a conspiracy.
Shredding machines at the FBI, Central Intelligence Agency and Defense Department were used overtime to dispose of documents that detailed the government's knowledge about Oswald.
When coupled together, Oswald's murder and the cover-up probably ensured that the many mysteries surrounding Kennedy's assassination never will be fully resolved. Kennedy assassination studies have attracted thousands of avid researchers, hobbyists and theorists of every stripe -- from serious history students to crackpots.
The 30th anniversary of Kennedy's death turned Dallas into a mecca for assassination buffs and for writers and collectors who have transformed the Kennedy murder followup into a variety of profit-making ventures that include books, T-shirts and Kennedy memorabilia.
If nothing else, American free enterprise may rule out a resolution to the question of who killed JFK and why.
This much was revealed by the U.S. House of Representatives "Select Committee on Assassinations" in a report to Congress on March 29, 1979:
-- Prior to Kennedy's fateful visit to Dallas, the FBI, CIA, Army Intelligence and the Office of Naval Intelligence all had files on Oswald because of his defection to the Soviet Union in late 1959 and his return to the United States in 1962.
His association with the pro-Fidel Castro "Fair Play for Cuba Committee" was reported in newspapers after his arrest in New Orleans on Aug. 9, 1963.
-- Oswald wrote a note to an FBI agent and delivered it to FBI headquarters in Dallas two or three weeks before Kennedy's slaying. Agent James P. Hosty told congressional investigators he didn't know it was Oswald who wrote the note until the day Kennedy was assassinated and Oswald arrested.
Dallas FBI Agent-In-Charge J. Gordon Shanklin ordered the note destroyed, Hosty said.
-- The CIA opened a file on Oswald on Dec. 9, 1960. An agency memorandum indicated the file was opened with the receipt of documents from the FBI, the State Department and the Navy.
-- The 112th Military Intelligence Group at Fort Sam Houston opened a file on Oswald because of pro-Castro activity in New Orleans the summer prior to Kennedy's assassination. Up to a dozen military intelligence agents were in Dallas the day the president was shot.
The intelligence file never was seen by the Warren Commission in 1964 and was "routinely" destroyed before the congressional committee began its work in 1976.
-- Beginning in March 1963, about eight months before Kennedy began the Texas trip, the Secret Service learned about "three significant threats to the president." The first two concerned planned presidential trips to Chicago in March and November. The third was in connection with a trip to Miami Nov. 18.
In the case of Miami, a police informant recorded a conversation with a "right-wing extremist" who said there was a plot to shoot Kennedy with a high-powered rifle from a tall building.
The congressional investigation report asserted: "The fact was, however, that two threats to assassinate President Kennedy with high-powered rifles, both of which occurred in early November 1963, were not relayed to the Dallas region."
No check of the Texas School Book Depository building was made prior to Kennedy's motorcade past the seven-story structure, where Oswald had worked since mid-October. The committee cited what it said was a failure by the Secret Service to protect the president and failures by the FBI, CIA and other government agencies to reveal important facts to either the Warren Commission, appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to investigate the assassination, or the public.
The congressional committee quoted Warren Commission members and staff as saying the most important information withheld from them was information surrounding a joint effort by the CIA and the Mafia to murder Cuban ruler Fidel Castro.
"They (Warren Commission members and staff) repeatedly noted that they had been significantly more disposed toward trusting the CIA and FBI in 1963 and 1964 than they would have been in 1978," the House committee report stated.

Truce in Six-Decade Nazi Sneaker War

A war that began one day in 1948, with a bitter falling out that divided a community into two rival camps, finally came to an end this week after six decades with a symbolic handshake on a day devoted to world peace.
We are not, unfortunately, talking about this handshake, or the Arab-Israeli conflict, but about the mysterious falling out between two German brothers, Adi and Rudolf Dassler, who dissolved their successful family sneaker business 61 years ago, set up rival sneaker companies, Adidas and Puma, on opposite sides of a river in the small Bavarian town of Herzogenaurach, and refused to speak to one another for the rest of their lives.
That family feud, which eventually grew into an intense and often bitter rivalry between the employees of the two companies, endured for years after the death of the two men, but on Monday the war between the two global sneaker superpowers ended when their current chief executives shook hands and staged a joint corporate event to promote the International Day of Peace.
In this video report, Stephanie West of Britain’s Channel 4 News explains that even though both Dassler brothers were members of the Nazi party, the company they ran together before the war made the shoes worn by Jesse Owens in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
To this day the exact origin of the split between the two brothers, now buried at opposite ends of the same graveyard, remains a mystery. As my fellow Times blogger Jeff Z. Klein noted on our 2006 World Cup blog, the German writer Ulrich Hesse-Lichtenberger explained in his book “Tor! The Story of German Football,” that their dispute eventually engulfed the entire town:
Rudolf Dassler moved out of the family home in the middle of the night. He crossed the river Aurach and set up his own company on the other side of town. It sounds like a story straight out of a Biblical parable, but on that day Herzogenaurach became a divided town, with an innocent stream serving as a natural barrier between the two factions. There were soon bars, shops, hotels and whole streets that practically belonged to one of the hostile camps, and somebody who worked for Adolf risked a shiner when walking into pubs run by Rudolf’s men. This situation never really changed.Another way of understanding how deep the divide became is that this week’s truce came about more than 30 years after the two brothers died.
Since the Dasslers went to their graves refusing to divulge what had ripped them apart, the best guess we have as to what sparked the war is an incident described by Barbara Smit, a Dutch journalist who spent five years digging through the archives of both Adidas and Puma, in their respective headquarters, still located on either side of the river Aurach. In her book “Sneaker Wars,” Ms. Smit writes that one night in 1943, when their shoe factory was working on behalf of the Nazi war effort, one of the brothers made a disparaging remark about the about the Allied planes bombing their town that the other brother thought was really meant for him:
One night, when Allied bombers started to drop their deadly loads on German soil, Rudolf Dassler took refuge in the family shelter with his son Armin, his wife, Friedl, and her sister Betti. They were promptly joined by Kathe and Adi, who snapped, “Here are the bloody bastards again.” It was obvious to Betti that Adi was peeved about the bombers, but Rudolf jumped up angrily at the remark. “It was impossible to persuade Rudolf that the comment was not [directed at] him,” Betti recalled.
Although they continued to live and work together for five more years, some historians of the civil war believe that the rift caused by that misunderstanding was never repaired.

1989: "Tempers Ignited as Conferees Claim Holocaust a Hoax" (Institute for Historical Review)

The Institute for Historical Review, a group that claims the Nazi Holocaust was a hoax, ended its 3-day meeting Monday by stirring outrage among residents of Huntington Beach's Old World Village, including one Jewish woman who was told by a conference participant, "You need the gas chamber!"
Six members of the militant Jewish Defense League showed up with signs to picket later in the day when conference participants were holding an impromptu news conference at the end of the meeting.
Although there was no physical violence, several conference participants shouted racial epithets at the protesters. Witnesses said police took away one man in handcuffs after he tried to strike Irv Rubin, national JDL chairman. A Huntington Beach police spokesman said late Monday that he could not confirm that an arrest was made.
"We were there to make a point," Rubin said. "We want to expose these people to the light of the day."
Earlier in the day, conference participants exchanged angry words with several residents of Old World Village, who said they had no idea the group was meeting there until they read about it in the newspaper.
Three plainclothes police officers were keeping an eye on things during the meeting, and several conference participants acting as security guards were stationed outside the basement of the German Community Church, where the meeting was held.
Old World Village is a condominium and commercial development built to resemble a Bavarian village where shopkeepers live on the grounds and a homeowners' association owns and manages the common grounds. Since 1982, however, the development has been embroiled in legal disputes, and it has been in receivership for the last 2 years.
Much of the animosity generated Monday by the Historical Review conference appeared intertwined with the legal disputes, which essentially have pitted the owner of the building where the meeting took place against the rest of the shopkeepers and homeowners. The building owner agreed to allow the conferees to meet without consulting the other village owners.
Expressions of Anger
But the mere presence of an estimated 200 people attending the Ninth International Revisionist Conference, which was forced to move from two Costa Mesa hotels after protests from the JDL, also sparked expressions of anger, outrage and hurt from many of the village residents.
Lony Hauff, owner of the Rathskeller restaurant, said conference participants had insulted his customers, calling them "Jews and traitors."
"We don't like this," Hauff said. "We don't need these kind of people here."
"I never was a Nazi, or a Jew," said Gene Pilz, a customer at the restaurant. "I never was a traitor."
In one conversation witnessed by a reporter, Georges Theil, a conference participant from France, told bridal shop owner Pat Weiss that the Holocaust did not happen.
When Weiss told Theil that several of her relatives were killed in Nazi concentration camps, he responded that there were no gas chambers and that perhaps Weiss' relatives did not disappear.
'You Are a Liar'
"You are a liar!" Weiss said.
"There were no gas chambers!" Theil shot back. "You need the gas chamber! You need the gas chamber!"
Weiss, unable to control her anger, spat on Theil, who then turned to a reporter and said, "They are hysterical people here."
Tom Marcellus, director of the Costa Mesa-based Institute for Historical Review, said the presence of the conference at the village represented a victory for free speech and a defeat for the JDL.
He said that despite the JDL's efforts to stop the meeting, which was attended by delegates from South Africa, Sweden, Germany, Japan, France, England, Switzerland, Canada and the United States, the group had managed to have a full conference "by hopscotching around."
After both the Red Lion Inn and the Holiday Inn in Costa Mesa refused to allow the group to meet there, Marcellus said the conference moved to the Huntington Beach Inn and, finally, to the village.
When asked why he agreed to rent to the Historical Review, Joseph Bischof, a native of Germany who designed the village, said, "Why shouldn't I?"
'Want to Correct History'
"I know that there is a lot of truth to what they say," Bischof said. "They want to correct history. I know that they didn't even have 6 million Jews in Europe. How could they have killed that many?"
As for the complaints of the other shop owners, Bischof dismissed them by saying, "Some of the store owners are sick."
But Cris Cris, owner of B.M.A. Financial Services in the village, said the presence of such a group sends a bad message to the public.
"I think it's a bad place to have a meeting," he said, "especially the connotation with the German village and the Holocaust being a predominately German thing. It is in very poor taste."
"If they would have brought (the matter) to the homeowners, it wouldn't be here," added his wife, Cathy Cris. "They shouldn't be allowed anywhere, particularly here."
Weiss, who was trembling after her encounter with Theil, said that a customer who read about the conference in a newspaper called her Monday to cancel a wedding gown she was planning to buy.
'I resent This'
"She said that under no circumstances would she ever set foot in the village again," Weiss said. "It makes my skin have goose bumps, having these people here. I'm a Jew, and I resent this very, very much."
Village employee Cecelia Baca, her eyes brimming with tears, said that nearly all of the relatives of her Polish grandmother, who was Catholic, were killed in the Holocaust.
"I don't approve of prejudice in the first place," she said. "The fact that these people are here, my grandmother is probably turning in her grave."
But such sentiments did not appear to trouble the conference participants, who said that anybody opposed to their meeting was guilty of prejudice themselves or was ill-informed.
"If they were more fully informed, they would, perhaps, be less upset," said Michael Laurence, 38, a technician who had come to the conference from Atlanta, Ga.
"The point of this conference is to educate people, and our belief is that if people are educated, they will believe as we do and all upset will be eliminated," Laurence said.
'Silly Story'
Conference participant Gerald Domitrovic, an attorney from Wichita, Kan., said the "real story" was that people were trying to silence the conference.
"The Holocaust is a silly story," he said. "It is silly on its face."
Jurgen Bless, a German Lutheran pastor who was opening up the German Community Church as the conference continued in the basement below, said he was not bothered by the presence of those who believe the Holocaust did not occur.
"The Holocaust is being taken too far," he said. "And these people are trying to set the record straight. And if it is wrong, then the truth will come out. What it looks like to me is that someone is afraid of what they have to say. . . . I feel everybody should have the right to say what they think."
But Frank Emma, vice president of the homeowners' association and owner of a frame shop in the village, said that he and other residents were offended by the message that the conference participants bring.
"Most of us are hard-working, sincere people," he said. "We don't like Nazis."
With that, Michele Weiss, daughter of Pat Weiss, returned to her home above the bridal shop and hung the American and the Israeli flag, which pictures the Star of David, off the balcony.
"We put it out there because I am not afraid of being Jewish," Pat Weiss said. "We are proud to be Jewish. . . . You just can't argue with these people."

Did Henry Kissinger Really Plan ‘An Accident’ for Bud Zumwalt?

Tomorrow, I’ll publish a new book, The Hawk and the Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan, and the History of the Cold War. And on Saturday, the New York Times ran a very nice story about some of the most interesting scoops and pieces of news in the book. I’ve been getting questions about one passage that stuck out for readers:
The story dates to a memo that I found in the papers of my grandfather, Paul Nitze. He was very close friends with Zumwalt when the latter man served as Chief of Naval Operations under Richard Nixon.
Zumwalt clashed with Kissinger from the very beginning of his tenure and, in November 1970, the two men had a long talk on a train during which Zumwalt noted down several statements that infuriated him. “K. feels that U.S. has passed its historic high point like so many earlier civilizations. He believes U.S. is on the downhill … the American people have only themselves to blame because they lack stamina to stay the course against the Russians who are ‘Sparta to our Athens.’”
Relations between the two men continued to deteriorate. During the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, Zumwalt became convinced that Kissinger was withholding supplies from Israel because he believed that a little bleeding would soften it up for his planned post-war diplomacy. After leaving the Navy, Zumwalt decided to run for the Senate in Virginia on, essentially, a platform of more weapons and less Kissinger. In the spring of 1976, with the Senate race in full swing, he published memoirs that had his notes of Kissinger’s harangue about Athens and Sparta blaring on the back cover. Kissinger, in turn, denounced Zumwalt’s “contemptible falsehoods.”
Then in early December 1975, a few months before the book was published, the phone rang in Zumwalt’s home. An unfamiliar voice gave a brief, hurried message: Henry Kissinger was soon going to hold a press conference to attack him. A few days later, the secretary of state did indeed hold a blistering 90-minute session in which he lambasted Zumwalt’s recent accusations before Congress that Kissinger was allowing the Soviets to violate the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
Then, on March 26th, 1976, about the same time that news of the Kissinger-bashing memoir came out, Zumwalt’s phone rang again and the voice of what sounded like the same man came on the line. “You should know that on at least two occasions recently Kissinger has said to [Soviet Ambassador Anatoly] Dobrynin ‘an accident should happen to Admiral Zumwalt.’” The caller then hung up.
Zumwalt made a memo of the call and passed it to Nitze. Here it is. I found it in Box 43, Folder 14, of Nitze’s papers.
I’m 100 percent confident that someone called Zumwalt and said these words. I’ve spoken with several people whom Zumwalt told about the call directly after it happened.
I don’t, however, have direct evidence that Kissinger said those words to Dobrynin or that the call came from Kissinger’s office. And even if it did, it’s not clear what exactly is meant by “an accident.” I spoke with a number of people who worked with Kissinger at the time. Some said that the threat seemed plausible: Kissinger was quite angry at the time. Others said it was ridiculous. When reporting in Moscow, I tried to reach Dobrynin, but he was too sick to be able to arrange an interview. One of his deputies, Alexander Bessmertnykh, said he didn’t think the memo was accurate. I had a very pleasant interview with Kissinger in which he spoke openly and positively about his relationship with Nitze, which moved to one of mutual admiration by their later years. But when I later asked him about the above memo he, as the Times wrote, called it paranoid bunk.
I did however learn one other interesting fact while trying to report out the details of the call. Right about the time that it happened, another curious incident occurred. ... Zumwalt’s youngest daughter, Mouza, a junior in high school, was spending the night at a friend’s house, about 45 minutes away. Driving back, the next day, she noticed a car following her. She stepped on the accelerator, but could not lose the tail. She made it home safely and ran inside screaming, “There’s someone following me!” Zumwalt grabbed the keys to his car, raced outside, and pinned the tailing car as it turned around in a neighbor’s driveway. What the hell is going on? demanded the tall, muscular admiral.
The driver mumbled that he worked for a security company and had noticed Mouza speeding. Zumwalt got the man’s name and driver’s license and called up a friend of his, Jack Lawn, who ranked high in FBI Headquarters. Lawn learned that the man was a government employee, though of what agency he was not sure. Eventually, Zumwalt and Mouza came to believe that Kissinger had ordered the man to follow Zumwalt’s ethnically Russian wife, also named Mouza—possibly to find information with which to blackmail the admiral. The man, Mouza presumed, must have made a mistake and followed the wrong person.
Was Kissinger behind this? He says absolutely not. But the family became absolutely certain and the incident had an effect on Zumwalt. Tomorrow, I’ll publish a new book, The Hawk and the Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan, and the History of the Cold War. And on Saturday, the New York Times ran a very nice story about some of the most interesting scoops and pieces of news in the book. I’ve been getting questions about one passage that stuck out for readers:Mr. Thompson also turned up evidence that suggested that Henry A. Kissinger had an agent follow the daughter of a political rival, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt Jr., known as Bud, and had told the Soviet ambassador that he would like to see Zumwalt have “an accident. Mr. Kissinger described the accusations, Mr. Thompson writes, as paranoid bunk.
The story dates to a memo that I found in the papers of my grandfather, Paul Nitze. He was very close friends with Zumwalt when the latter man served as Chief of Naval Operations under Richard Nixon.
Zumwalt clashed with Kissinger from the very beginning of his tenure and, in November 1970, the two men had a long talk on a train during which Zumwalt noted down several statements that infuriated him. “K. feels that U.S. has passed its historic high point like so many earlier civilizations. He believes U.S. is on the downhill … the American people have only themselves to blame because they lack stamina to stay the course against the Russians who are ‘Sparta to our Athens.’”
Relations between the two men continued to deteriorate. During the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, Zumwalt became convinced that Kissinger was withholding supplies from Israel because he believed that a little bleeding would soften it up for his planned post-war diplomacy. After leaving the Navy, Zumwalt decided to run for the Senate in Virginia on, essentially, a platform of more weapons and less Kissinger. In the spring of 1976, with the Senate race in full swing, he published memoirs that had his notes of Kissinger’s harangue about Athens and Sparta blaring on the back cover. Kissinger, in turn, denounced Zumwalt’s “contemptible falsehoods.”
Then in early December 1975, a few months before the book was published, the phone rang in Zumwalt’s home. An unfamiliar voice gave a brief, hurried message: Henry Kissinger was soon going to hold a press conference to attack him. A few days later, the secretary of state did indeed hold a blistering 90-minute session in which he lambasted Zumwalt’s recent accusations before Congress that Kissinger was allowing the Soviets to violate the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
Then, on March 26th, 1976, about the same time that news of the Kissinger-bashing memoir came out, Zumwalt’s phone rang again and the voice of what sounded like the same man came on the line. “You should know that on at least two occasions recently Kissinger has said to [Soviet Ambassador Anatoly] Dobrynin ‘an accident should happen to Admiral Zumwalt.’” The caller then hung up.
Zumwalt made a memo of the call and passed it to Nitze. Here it is. I found it in Box 43, Folder 14, of Nitze’s papers.I’m 100 percent confident that someone called Zumwalt and said these words. I’ve spoken with several people whom Zumwalt told about the call directly after it happened.
I don’t, however, have direct evidence that Kissinger said those words to Dobrynin or that the call came from Kissinger’s office. And even if it did, it’s not clear what exactly is meant by “an accident.” I spoke with a number of people who worked with Kissinger at the time. Some said that the threat seemed plausible: Kissinger was quite angry at the time. Others said it was ridiculous. When reporting in Moscow, I tried to reach Dobrynin, but he was too sick to be able to arrange an interview. One of his deputies, Alexander Bessmertnykh, said he didn’t think the memo was accurate. I had a very pleasant interview with Kissinger in which he spoke openly and positively about his relationship with Nitze, which moved to one of mutual admiration by their later years. But when I later asked him about the above memo he, as the Times wrote, called it paranoid bunk.
I did however learn one other interesting fact while trying to report out the details of the call. Right about the time that it happened, another curious incident occurred. ... Zumwalt’s youngest daughter, Mouza, a junior in high school, was spending the night at a friend’s house, about 45 minutes away. Driving back, the next day, she noticed a car following her. She stepped on the accelerator, but could not lose the tail. She made it home safely and ran inside screaming, “There’s someone following me!” Zumwalt grabbed the keys to his car, raced outside, and pinned the tailing car as it turned around in a neighbor’s driveway. What the hell is going on? demanded the tall, muscular admiral.
The driver mumbled that he worked for a security company and had noticed Mouza speeding. Zumwalt got the man’s name and driver’s license and called up a friend of his, Jack Lawn, who ranked high in FBI Headquarters. Lawn learned that the man was a government employee, though of what agency he was not sure. Eventually, Zumwalt and Mouza came to believe that Kissinger had ordered the man to follow Zumwalt’s ethnically Russian wife, also named Mouza—possibly to find information with which to blackmail the admiral. The man, Mouza presumed, must have made a mistake and followed the wrong person.
Was Kissinger behind this? He says absolutely not. But the family became absolutely certain and the incident had an effect on Zumwalt. He became convinced that Kissinger was taping his calls, and perhaps bugging his house as well. At night, one friend of his told me, Zumwalt used to crawl into bed, smile, and say, “goodnight Henry.”

Capitalizing Security: “Non-Lethal” Weapons and the Market

When the U.S. military planned to deploy Raytheon’s Active Denial System (ADS) in Iraq, it set off a political firestorm. How couldn’t it?
Known for its “goodbye effect,” the so-called “pain ray” is a “non-lethal” directed energy weapon that repels “rioters” and other disreputable citizens by heating the outer surface of the skin to 130 degrees F. in short, directed bursts. With a range of some 550 yards, the microwave beam can penetrate clothing and its effects have been described by test subjects as nothing less than “excruciating.”
The prospect that American “liberators” would soon be zapping “unruly mobs,” that is, Iraqi citizens objecting to the destruction of their country and the looting of their resource-rich nation by Western (corporate) invaders proved to be a public relations nightmare for the Pentagon.
The Defense Science Board concluded that an ADS deployment was “not politically tenable,” because of a “possible association with torture” if the system were used at detention centers to ensure “compliance” from recalcitrant prisoners.
Last year I reported (see: ‘”Non-Lethal’ Weapons: Where Science and Technology Service Repression,” July 8, 2008), that the Pentagon’s Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD) claimed that ADS “is helping to fill the gap between the ’shout’ and ’shoot’ alternatives faced by our troops.” But standing up ADS in the Iraqi “theatre” was not to be.
However, as readers of Antifascist Calling are well-aware, being an imperialist empire means never to have to say you’re sorry. Time for Plan B!
Coming Soon to the Heimat
According to a blurb on Raytheon’s web site, the commercial version of ADS known as Silent Guardian “is a revolutionary less-than-lethal directed energy application that employs millimeter wave technology to repel individuals or crowds without causing injury.”
Touted as providing a “zone of protection that saves lives, protects assets and minimizes collateral damage” the system is marketed as the ideal tool to “establish intent and de-escalate aggression.” Commercial and military application envisaged for the system “include law enforcement, checkpoint security, facility protection, force protection and peacekeeping missions.” Some “peace,” eh?!
Capitalizing on the profit-rich “homeland security” market, Wired reported that Raytheon has announced an “impending direct commercial sale” of a miniature version of ADS to law enforcement agencies.
This is Active Denial in a box, a 10,000-pound containerized system that can be mounted on a ship, a truck, or a fixed installation. It’s got an effective range of about 250 meters. While Hambling may believe it “paradoxical” that “the controversial ‘pain beam’ may be more acceptable in the civilian market than in the military,” I’d beg to differ.
Given the empire’s utter contempt for its citizens (witness the despicable “debate” by various grifting congressional factions over what is ludicrously described as health care “reform”–a cynical display of bellying up to the corporatist bar if ever there were one!), why would any sane person not believe that heimat securocrats wouldn’t zap union malcontents during a strike, environmental activists protesting outside a polluting company’s headquarters or an unruly crowd of pensioners demanding their looted savings back from any number of dodgy banks grown fat on TARP funds?
“Tough luck, suckers! Have a ‘taste’ of Silent Guardian!”
No. 5 on Washington Technology’s 2009 “Top 100 List,” of Prime Federal Contractors, Raytheon carries a lot of clout with Congress and the Pentagon. With some $5,942,575,316 in revenue from its defense portfolio, the Waltham, Mass. firm’s major customers include the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security.
Not that being a behemoth isn’t without its pitfalls. According to the Project on Government Oversight’s Federal Contractor Misconduct Database, Raytheon clocks in at No. 5 as a company with a history of “misconduct such as contract fraud and environmental, ethics, and labor violations.”
With some some 17 instances of what POGO characterizes as serious breeches ranging from overcharges, contractor kickbacks, False Claims Act Violations, to violations of SEC Rules, groundwater contamination and racial discrimination, Raytheon has been tagged for some $475.8 million in what the government watchdog group calls it’s “total misconduct dollar amount.”
Not that any of this matters in Washington. According to the Center for Responsive Politic’s OpenSecrets.org database, Raytheon’s Political Action Committee bestowed some $2.4 million in campaign contributions on the best politicians money can buy, with some 55% of the total going to grifting Democrats. A perusal of the recipients of Raytheon largess during the last election cycle provides insight into how the well-greased wheels really spin.
“Liberal” or “conservative,” “dove” or “hawk” it doesn’t matter, just keep those contracts flowing! And when it comes to “homeland security” no expense will be spared!
According to Wired, while the firm believes that Silent Guardian “might have all sorts of applications in law enforcement, prisons and protecting installations,” the firm told the publication that although the system “has attracted widespread interest … it would be premature for us to discuss any sales until contracts are signed.”
Although Raytheon isn’t saying what the price tag for Silent Guardian will cost cash-strapped municipalities staggering under the hammer blows of the current capitalist economic meltdown, most analysts believe the system will cost several million dollars to purchase and maintain.
Not everyone is thrilled however, by the prospect of local SWAT teams zapping citizens with a microwave weapon. Neil Davison, a researcher at the University of Bradford’s Non-Lethal Weapons Research Project in the UK, told Wired “as the costs and size drop, expect police forces to become more and more interested. This is where function creep will become a problem. With current controversies over the misuse of the Taser, the spread of new military weapons technologies to the civilian realm does not seem like a very sensible way to go.”
But “go” it must and most assuredly will.
As I reported in June (see: “Look! Up in the Sky! It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s a Raytheon Spy Blimp!”), the spread of military technology into the homeland security market isn’t limited to non-lethal weapons.
The deployment of Raytheon’s Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment spy blimp known as RAID, is kitted-out with “electro-optic infrared, radar, flash and acoustic detectors.”
Perfect for spying on antiwar demonstrators from a safe perch in the clouds, the firm’s use of blimps “carrying high-tech sensors to detect threats” will “enable appropriate countermeasures” from law enforcement, according to a company press release. Some 300 RAID airships have already been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
More “Venom” from Our Capitalist Masters
Should Raytheon’s “pain beam” not do the trick, Combined Systems Inc. (CSI), a subsidiary of The Carlyle Group, may have just the right product for enterprising homeland security bureaucrats and their corporate partners.
The firm, acquired by Carlyle in 2005, is described in a blurb on Carlyle’s web site as a manufacturer of “branded less-lethal munitions, anti-riot products and other related products that serve the military and law enforcement markets in the United States and abroad.”
Wired reported in late August that “the Marine Corps has issued an urgent request for a powerful non-lethal weapon that can fire volleys of 40mm grenades. And in parallel, the service is launching a push for a more futuristic version of the same weapon.”
One might also add, such a monstrous “non-lethal” system will inevitably have homeland security applications after a bit of tweaking is done to create a scaleable version useful to those who “protect and serve.”
Dubbed the Venom Non-Lethal Tube Munition System (NL/TMS) by CSI, according to the firm Venom “is a modular launching system accepting three cassettes, each loaded with ten cartridges (V-30) or the scaled-down, lightweight and portable version accepting one cassette (V-10). Both versions can be integrated into a variety of fire control systems. Each cartridge is assigned an IP address allowing individual cartridge or desired sequence firing from a fire control panel, communicating via cable or wireless device.”
Unsurprisingly, an assigned IP address can mean only one thing: that Venom is RFID-chipped for inventory control and, as part of the “internet of things” described by researchers Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre in their essential book Spychips every commodity–from breakfast cereal to weapons–have their own web page. Convenient, isn’t it! According to Wired,
Venom is essentially a modern version of the old multi-barreled cannon used to fight off boarders in naval actions, but in non-lethal form. It’s designed for firing at crowds, and many of the munition options contain sub-projectiles to enhance the “shotgun” effect. These include a load of 24 .60 cal hard rubber stingballs, 160 smaller stingballs, foam batons, and “multi flash bang” projectiles. Venom can also fire CS gas projectiles, but these are strictly off-limits for military operations (unless you happen to work for Blackwater). It can also be used for smoke and marker rounds. Which just goes to show as I’ve pointed out many times, “what happens in Vegas” certainly doesn’t stay there! This bitter truth is all the more compelling when you consider the tens of billions of dollars at stake as the military market literally bleeds over into the homeland security bazaar; a marketing guru’s wet dream that possesses unlimited horizons.
But let’s understand one inescapable fact about life in the United States, a veritable open air asylum fronting as a democratic republic: we’re so much disposable chaff to be tossed aside by our masters, marginalized when the need arises or violently repressed when all other means have failed.

New Book Exposes Pedophilia, Government Officials and Cover-up

A nationwide pedophile ring, run by a pair of Republican powerbrokers, had access to the highest levels of our government, connections to the CIA, and used venerable Boys Town orphanage as a pedophilic reservoir.
THE FRANKLIN SCANDAL, by Nick Bryant, will be the first commercially published book to tell the shocking true tale of the power elite involved in the most despicable crimes against children. These youths were used, abused, and discarded, and knew what would happen to them if they ever came clean. In one case, a young girl who had been abused since the age of 14 refused to recant her abuse to authorities, and she was sentenced to prison for 9-15 years on trumped up perjury charges.
Nebraska legislators nearly exposed the ring, but its unveiling had the potential to produce seismic political aftershocks.
