Man Exposed After Denying KKK Affiliations
By Ken Ward

(07/30/07 -- HENDERSON) - For several weeks, the man accused of chasing a Henderson couple at gunpoint, has denied being a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

However, hours after speaking out, Eyewitness News obtained audio of a man who appears to be Anthony Finch, talking on a radio show organized by a white supremacist group, the National Socialist Workers Party.

The National Socialist Workers Party is reportedly the same group that has been sending out a mass mailing, threatening leaders of the NAACP.

The group has been printing out fliers urging Euro-Americans to aid a man at the heart of a racial incident. And it hasn't stopped with a flier.

The group is also on radio defending their decision to threaten NAACP leadership, which NAACP leaders want stopped.

"We see this as an uptake, as an escalation. And we take it as a threat against all NAACP and all people of good will," Rev. William Barber said.

The controversy started last month when Finch chased a black couple at gunpoint.

Police say the incident brings to attention whether Finch is a member or has been a member of the Klan.

"I've been a member of the Henderson Police Department and that's it for 23 and a half years, till I got sick and now I'm disabled," Finch claims.

Nevertheless, audio from a radio talk show, a man identifying himself as Anthony Finch of Henderson North Carolina spoke with a member of the national social workers party.

"What about your local Klan, the radio host said.

"What the Klan is doing here is pretty much inviting, trying to get people to help me here. I'm trying to get activists to help me here," Finch responded.

"Everybody sees that because it's a white on black affair they don't want to get involved. Really I feel like a t shirt on a clothes line. Hung out to dry.

The NAACP says its time for state leaders to step in.

"This is not America. We cannot be concerned about terrorism over yonder and not be concerned about domestic terrorism here in our own back yard," Barber said.

The NAACP has also reported the threat to the FBI, an investigation is reportedly underway.

TAM Jet Sabotaged?: THE PILOTS DIDN'T KNOW OF FAILED THRUSTER - "Only one reverser. Spoiler nothing!" Last Words of the TAM Pilots Before Brazil Crash

BY ALEX CONSTANTINE

For the political context, timeline of revelations, technical information, leaks and misleading official statements, also see, "Brazil TAM Airline Crash (Updated)":
http://alexconstantine.blogspot.com/2007/07/brazil-tam-airline-crash-updated.html

TAM executives have stated – but only after a Globo TV report exposed it – that one Flight 3054 thruster was inoperative. This was a known concern, but not a serious one because the thruster was only "complementary," "not essential" to landing. This all came, of course, after TAM's CEO stated that the airbus was in "perfect condition." So the spoilure failure was known, after all, per TAM's revised statements ... but on the cockpit tape transcript just released, the pilots are startled to find the thruster not engaging. They panic, react as if they were completely unaware of the problem.

Mechanical failure appears to be the cause of the "accident," not "pilot error" as the Luiz da Silva government suggested shortly after the crash, and THE PILOTS DID NOT KNOW about it.

I now hold open the definite possibility that the flight was sabotaged. In fact, sabotage - DELIBERATE OR NOT, this much is arguable - is the unavoidable conclusion at this stage in the investigation:

Cockpit recorder reveals pilots’ terror in Brazil plane crash
By Associated Press
August 1, 2007

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - The pilots of doomed TAM Airlines flight 3054 screamed "slow down!" and "turn, turn, turn!" seconds before their Airbus A320 skidded off the runway in Sao Paulo and slammed into a building last month, flight recorder transcripts revealed Wednesday.

According to transcripts read before a congressional commission investigating air safety in Brazil, the pilots were UNABLE TO ACTIVATE THE SPOILERS - aerodynamic brakes on the plane’s wings - as they sped down the short, rain-slicked runway.

"Only one reverser. SPOILER NOTHING," says pilot Henrique Stephanini Di Sacco, 53, giving the FIRST INDICATION that something is wrong.

"Look at that. Slow down, slow down," says co-pilot Kleyber Lima, 54. Di Sacco replies: "I can’t. I can’t. Oh my God! Oh my God!"

Lima’s last words are: "Go! Go! Turn! Turn! Turn!"

The recording ends with screams and a woman’s voice, followed by an explosion. ...

SNIP

IN OTHER WORDS, THE POSSIBILITY MUST BE EXPLORED THAT THE PILOTS WERE NOT INFORMED THAT THE SPOILER HAD BEEN DISENGAGED.

The story continues: "The congressional commission did not review the data recorder information publicly, but seemed to acknowledge the [Brazil Air Force] report’s accuracy by discussing how the information was leaked.

The commission’s president, Rep. Marco Maia, said he believes mechanical failure was behind the crash.

"From what we have determined, we can confirm that the machine failed," Maia told reporters in Brasilia. But he added that investigators must still "thoroughly examine all the possibilities."

Brazilian aviation consultant Elias Gedeon said it was too early to say if the pilot put the throttle in the wrong position.

Folha speculated that the plane’s computer system could have interpreted an incorrect throttle position as evidence the pilot was trying to take off again, automatically disabling the spoilers.

"There are signs that this happened," Gedeon said when asked about Folha’s hypothesis. "But we can’t say 100 percent this was the problem."

TAM’s press office declined to comment on the crash until the investigation is finished. Airbus spokeswoman Barbara Kracht said the aircraft manufacturer also could not comment on the probe, citing international aviation rules.

The airline has acknowledged that one of the jet’s thrust reversers, used for braking, had been deactivated before the crash. Planes are allowed to fly with only one functioning thrust reverser, but it can make braking more difficult.

Video footage of the plane landing showed it speeding down the runway more than three times faster than other planes.

According to the cockpit transcript, one of the pilots asked about conditions on the runway shortly before landing and was told: "wet and slippery."

Soon after the crash, some speculated that the runway, which is short and notoriously slick in rainy weather, contributed to the crash.

A finding that pilot error or mechanical failure was responsible would likely ease criticism of the government, which has been widely accused of failing to address Brazil’s aviation woes after a Gol jetliner went down in the Amazon last September, killing 154 people.

That crash touched off months of work stoppages and slowdowns by air traffic controllers, who complained of dangerous working conditions.

The runway at Congonhas had been shut earlier this year for renovations, but was opened before it could be grooved _ a process that helps water run off and provides better traction in rain.

Rewriting History: Confabulating Stinkbug Vincent Bugliosi Fulfills Orwell Prophecy

How could we possibly have an Orwellian society without historical revisionists like Vincent Bugliosi? He fulfills the prophecy of "1948," the original title of dystopian "1984." He is an unreformed Smith, so we can look at Bugliosi, the monopolist of "common sense," himself as a work of fiction beyond reclamation. His most ambitious creation is Vince Bugliosi, a work-in-progress, famed prosecutor and investigative wizard - in the end, a legend of flatulence and petulent, ego-syntonic snits. He is the worst America has to offer - so, of course, he is widely respected in Mockingbird Land.

Reclaiming History from Vince Bugliosi
by: Real History Lisa
Thu May 17, 2007

Vincent Bugliosi, the famed prosecutor of the Manson case, has stopped putting liars in jail and started putting them in print. In his Orwellian-named book, "Reclaiming History," Bugliosi purports to answer all the questions and shut all the doors to conspiracy in the assassination of President Kennedy. Long before we get to the question of why he would waste the later years of his life on such an impossible task, the first question we need to ask is this:
Is this an honest presentation?

After just minutes in its pages, I was shocked at how easily I could answer that.

Real History Lisa :: Reclaiming History from Vince Bugliosi

No. This is not an honest presentation of the case. This is completely one-sided attempt to do the impossible, to wash away the conspiracy and pretend it never happened.

Now I was hoping to come and tell you that while I thought Bugliosi was an honest man, he was simply wrong. He subscribed to Probe magazine for several years. So I know he's not ignorant of the facts. He's just incredibly biased in many cases, and in some, he's flat out dishonest.

He's wrong too, but everyone can be wrong, now and then, and that is not a crime.

Deliberately misrepresenting history, however, is the highest possible crime to this Real History lover. So I'll start the ball in motion. A lot of us will be reclaiming history from the death grip Mr. Bugliosi has tried, but spectacularly failed, to put on the JFK case over the next several months.

I turned right to the chapter that most interested me: his chapter on the CIA. After 15 years of research, serious on-the-ground research interviewing people and reading original documents that were never supposed to see the light of day, I've come to the firm conclusion that specific people in the CIA were involved in the crime. Of course I'm curious to see how Bugliosi is going to explain all the evidence away.

So how does he open? With a great big lie:

For years, conspiracy theorists have written books about the Central Intelligence Agency's involvement in the assassination of JFK. And as conspiracy theorist E . Martin Schotz, a mathematician and practicing psychiatrist, puts it, "I and other ordinary citizens know, know for a fact, that there was a conspiracy [to murder Kennedy] and that it was organized at the highest levels of the CIA ."' The fact that Schotz and his fellow conspiracy theorists haven't been able to come up with any evidence connecting the CIA to the assassination or Oswald has not troubled them in the least.

Let's look at that last sentence closely.

"...not been able to come up with ANY EVIDENCE connecting the CIA to the assassination or Oswald..."

That's a lie. And Bugliosi, as a prosecutor, knows full well the difference between evidence and proof. I'd be the first to concede that no one has yet proved the CIA was involved in the assassination. But there's a world of evidence that paints direct ties between the CIA and the assassination.

Let's start with some testimony from the HSCA, the House Select Committee on Assassinations, formed in the 70s to reinvestigate the crime due to the government's acknowledgment that the CIA had withheld critical evidence from the Warren Commission during its investigation. The CIA assassination plots against Castro and other foreign leaders emerged, as did their breaking of the law domestically by wiretapping Americans on our own soil, in direct violation of their charter. (These, by the way, are the people whose side Bugliosi takes when faced with believing those liars or the people who gave up a good portion of their time to find the truth about what happened.)

Let's start with some pretty dang interesting evidence. Former CIA finance officer James Wilcott, who said one of his colleagues told him he'd been drawing money for "Oswald" or the "Oswald project." Bugliosi tries to shoot this down, noting even the HSCA report writers found Wilcott not credible. But ask yourself. If the CIA was behind the crime, do you think for a second they'd allow the truth to be written into the report? If the CIA is behind the assassination, this same episode, written by Bugliosi to make the case that Wilcott was not credible, can be turned around to make Wilcott ultimately credible. Bugliosi writes:

Wilcott 's credibility suffered even further when an intelligence analyst whom Wilcott said he discussed the Oswald allegation with at the post told the committee he wasn't in Tokyo at the time of the assassination, the committee verifying that he had been transferred back to the United States in 1962, the previous year. Finally, the committee interviewed many CIA personnel who had been stationed in Tokyo at the time, including the chief of the post and other personnel who surely would have known if Oswald had had any association with the agency in Tokyo, and all had no knowledge of such an association.

If the CIA was behind the crime, it makes perfect sense they'd launch other employees more loyal to the agency at the HSCA to discredit Wilcott's account. People who work for abroad for the CIA have to lie every day about who they are and what they do. Richard Helms, a former CIA director, famously deemed his perjury charge a "badge of honor."

And why would we expect CIA employees to suddenly tell the truth to a government they felt no subservience to, as evidenced by James Angleton's famous retort when questioned under oath by the Church Committee in the Senate: "It is inconceivable that a secret intelligence arm of the government has to comply with all the overt orders of the government." In other words, one of the top CIA officials deemed the CIA above the law. Numerous books on the agency show that opinion was widely held on the covert side of the Agency. In fact, that opinion was so widely held that President Kennedy had famously promised to shatter the Agency. He took the first step to following through on that threat when he created the DIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency. Kennedy wanted to move the rogue CIA covert operations, called "fun and games" by Agency insiders, to the DIA where it would be under the far more accountable military chain of command. Many in the CIA saw this as a direct attack on the Agency. Many of us have speculated that was a key reason Kennedy was killed. In any case, it's not hard to imagine that when the Agency was under attack by Wilcott, the same knee jerk reaction followed -- protect the CIA at all costs.

Bugliosi, through naïveté or deception, doesn't even entertain the possibility that Wilcott was telling the truth. But he ends with a lie, no matter how you slice it, by saying Wilcott's story is not evidence. But of course it IS evidence. It is simply not proof.

In fact, there had been, at one point, so much evidence of the CIA's involvement with Oswald that it warranted its own section of the HSCA report. In Probe Magazine, Vol. 4 No. 2, I wrote a long article called "Who's Running the Country? How the Mexico City Report Informs us in 1996." The "Mexico City Report" was a summary of Oswald's trip to Mexico and attendant matters, written by Ed Lopez and Dan Hardway. In the article, I quoted Lopez on this point. When Jim DiEugenio had interviewed Lopez about the report, DiEugenio had asked, wasn't there supposed to be a section about Oswald and the CIA? Lopez was surprised that it was gone, and can be heard flipping through the pages of the report on the tape of the interview. "It's completely gone," he said in obvious surprise, adding later, "They [the CIA] hated it -- that section. Totally. They just hated that section." In other words, a whole piece of evidence our tax dollars paid for was removed. I'll give you one guess as to who removed it.

How can you produce evidence if your suspect keeps hiding the ball? Bugliosi says if you can't prove otherwise, there there's no conspiracy. I say if we can't prove otherwise, maybe it's because we're exactly right about the CIA's role in the conspiracy.

And how's this for evidence? In David Talbot's book "Brothers," Talbot writes about Ruben Carbajal, a friend of David Morales, a CIA bigwig from the notorious JM/WAVE station in Florida, the CIA's largest station inside the US, and his information regarding the Kennedy assassination:

Carbajal does know who killed JFK -- it was the CIA, he said, without naming any individuals. Morales and his close CIA colleague Tony Sforza both told him the agency was behind the Dallas plot. The Kennedys got what was coming to them. Carbajal insisted: "[President] Kennedy screwed up, caused all those deaths at the Bay of Pigs, he pulls off the planes, the men get caught on the ground. You want me to respect a president like that? Or an asshole like his brother?"

Is that proof? No. But is that evidence? Heck yeah. If Bugliosi had someone saying that about Charlie Manson when he was looking for evidence to put him behind bars, do you think he would have walked by such a large allegation without investigating it thoroughly? That's why researchers keep searching the Kennedy case. The evidence of the CIA's involvement is plentiful. The proof, however, remains elusive, which would also make perfect sense since the CIA has funds that are not available for congressional scrutiny. They can do anything they want. They can lie with impunity. When caught by the House and Senate in separate investigation breaking numerous laws, what happened? Was anyone in the CIA prosecuted? No. The laws were changed to accommodate the Agency. So Bugliosi can spout about their innocence all he wants. But to this very serious, longtime researcher, his explanations ring hollow.

In this next example, you have to wonder whether Bugliosi is ignorant, deceptive, or simply criminally naïve! Imagine that Bugliosi had been prosecuting the OJ case. Let's say OJ wanted to evaluate his own DNA evidence. The Bugliosi we think we know would have laughed him out of court, maybe even adding as OJ slunk out that such a suggestion was itself almost a tacit admission of guilt. But look what Bugliosi falls for here:

in 1996, the CIA released a study titled "Getting to Know the President, CIA Briefings of Presidential Candidates, 1952-1992," by the CIA deputy director for intelligence, John L . Helgerson. On a one-year assignment, Helgerson interviewed "former presidents, CIA directors, and numerous others involved" in the nine presidencies covered by the subject period to ascertain the CIA's relationship with the various presidents. On the issue so dear to conspiracy theorists--the CIA's alleged animosity for Kennedy, and hence, its motive to kill him--it is very noteworthy that Helgerson's study reported that "the [CIA's] relationship with Kennedy was not only a distinct improvement over the more formal relationship with Eisenhower, but would only rarely be matched in future administrations."

So a CIA deputy director declares, by implication, the CIA's innocence in the killing of Kennedy. And Bugliosi falls for it! He does this throughout this book, by the way, falling for CIA-sponsored explanations while ignoring the fact that the CIA was the source for the rebuttal of its own guilt! How silly is that? Has he lost his marbles? Did he ever have them?

How can this be the vaunted prosecutor of the Manson days?

Or maybe, what we don't know about the Manson case to this day would explain Bugliosi's bizarre allegiance to the CIA.

After all, it was a Manson protégé that almost became another presidential assassin. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme nearly managed to kill Gerald Ford. (Seventeen days later, Sarah Jane Moore, who had at one time been an FBI informant, would fail in a second attempt on Ford's life, one that would finally have put a Rockefeller in the White House.) Dr. Louis Jolyon West, who had interviewed Jack Ruby after the JFK assassination and who was a leading force in the CIA's MKULTRA research from his position at UCLA, was quick to offer his comments on Fromme to Time Magazine after her failed assassination attempt:

Trying to explain Fromme's fascination with violence, Dr. Louis Jolyon West, head of the psychiatry department at U.C.L.A., points out that she was part of a group whose members all were paranoid to varying degrees. "They all suffered from a group syndrome," he says. "There was a pattern of holding to false beliefs with even greater conviction and emotional commitment than a normal person's beliefs that are subject to the laws of evidence. They were being victimized by conspiracies and plots coming from very high levels of Government. This affirms the grandiosity of their self-image, and it justifies the violence with which they strike back."

Or maybe they had notions of conspiracies and plots because they were the product of them.

I've never had time to look into the Manson case, but I've often wondered about an MKULTRA link there. Manson was transferred to Vacaville prison in the late seventies. Vacaville had earlier been the site of CIA research on an MKULTRA subproject named MKSEARCH. Manson had been in a variety of prisons most of his life, any of which might also have been sites for experimentation. I'm not suggesting anything here other than that there may be more to the Manson story than we ever know. Goodness knows Bugliosi's hate-filled diatribe against the "kooks" and "nuts" who speak the obvious, that there was a conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy, calls into question all his earlier reporting, and makes me wonder what we might have learned had someone more honest taken up the Manson case.

Seriously, every page I've flipped to by searching or randomly browsing so far is fraught with lies, errors, and omissions -- the very things he accuses the research community of doing. Is he just an anti-conspiracy zealot, out to defend a world view he can't afford to have shaken? Or is something more sinister at work? Maybe a look into his past would give us some answers.

Why is it that when you can scratch the background of nearly every writer on this case who has claimed there was no conspiracy, you can find a CIA link in their past or present? James Phelan, a respected Saturday Evening Post reporter who attacked Jim Garrison's prosecution of Clay Shaw in the only trial ever brought on the Kennedy assassination conspiracy, turned out to be not only an FBI informant, but a close friend of the CIA's point man on the anti-Castro plots. Hugh Aynesworth, responsible for nearly all the original Dallas coverage of the event, who later repeated his coverage for Newsweek, had applied to work for the CIA the month before the assassination.

Reporter Hal Hendrix, called "the Spook" because of his intelligence agency connections, was the one who supplied Seth Kantor with background info on Oswald in record time right after the assassination. Hendrix was a close friend of David Atlee Phillips, the CIA man most often fingered as a conspirator due to the extensive documentary record, and the man whom all the Castro did it" stories that surfaced originally can be traced to.

Gerald Posner? He came to fame by writing a book that excused the CIA for its failure to find Mengele. He also wrote a fictional book which featured a Cold War CIA hero pitted against a newfangled government bureaucracy. Max Holland? He got his start at the Voice of America, long acknowledged as a propaganda outlet for the CIA abroad. And when "liberal" Holland couldn't get his regular employer, The Nation, to run one of his lone-nut screeds, whom did he turn to? Why, the CIA, of course, which was more than happy to publish his work in their in-house publication "Studies in Intelligence."

Consider for just a moment. Why is it that everywhere you look in the media, the voices telling us that Oswald was a lone assassin (and therefore, the CIA didn't do it) all seem to have ties to the CIA?

This was brought home yet again at a conference in DC a couple of years ago. One man got up to attempt to prove that famous "dictabelt" tape, recorded by a policeman whose microphone was stuck on, did not in fact capture shots in Dealey plaza. (Because if it did, it captured four shots, and hence, at least two shooters.) At the end of his presentation, I challenged his presentation, because he relied on science provided by a Nobel prize-winning scientist who also drew a paycheck from the CIA. The man then said sure, his source was CIA, but so what? "I am too," he said. In other words, yet again, the people most actively pushing a lone nut scenario were directly connected to the CIA.

I'll leave you with these excerpts from a CIA memo that instructed its media assets how to discuss the CIA assassination.

This document caused quite a stir when it was discovered in 1977. Dated 4/1/67, and marked "DESTROY WHEN NO LONGER NEEDED", this document is a stunning testimony to how concerned the CIA was over investigations into the Kennedy assassination. Emphasis has been added to facilitate scanning.

This is CIA Document #1035-960, marked "PSYCH" for presumably Psychological Warfare Operations, in the division "CS", the Clandestine Services, sometimes known as the "dirty tricks" department.

RE: Concerning Criticism of the Warren Report

Our Concern. From the day of President Kennedy's assassination on, there has been speculation about the responsibility for his murder. Although this was stemmed for a time by the Warren Commission report, (which appeared at the end of September 1964), various writers have now had time to scan the Commission's published report and documents for new pretexts for questioning, and there has been a new wave of books and articles criticizing the Commission's findings. In most cases the critics have speculated as to the existence of some kind of conspiracy, and often they have implied that the Commission itself was involved. Presumably as a result of the increasing challenge to the Warren Commission's report, a public opinion poll recently indicated that 46% of the American public did not think that Oswald acted alone, while more than half of those polled thought that the Commission had left some questions unresolved. Doubtless polls abroad would show similar, or possibly more adverse results.

This trend of opinion is a matter of concern to the U.S. government, including our organization. The members of the Warren Commission were naturally chosen for their integrity, experience and prominence. They represented both major parties, and they and their staff were deliberately drawn from all sections of the country. Just because of the standing of the Commissioners, efforts to impugn their rectitude and wisdom tend to cast doubt on the whole leadership of American society. Moreover, there seems to be an increasing tendency to hint that President Johnson himself, as the one person who might be said to have benefited, was in some way responsible for the assassination. Innuendo of such seriousness affects not only the individual concerned, but also the whole reputation of the American government. Our organization itself is directly involved: among other facts, we contributed information to the investigation. Conspiracy theories have frequently thrown suspicion on our organization, for example by falsely alleging that Lee Harvey Oswald worked for us. The aim of this dispatch is to provide material countering and discrediting the claims of the conspiracy theorists, so as to inhibit the circulation of such claims in other countries. Background information is supplied in a classified section and in a number of unclassified attachments.

Action. We do not recommend that discussion of the assassination question be initiated where it is not already taking place. Where discussion is active [business] addresses are requested:

a. To discuss the publicity problem with [?] and friendly elite contacts (especially politicians and editors), pointing out that the Warren Commission made as thorough an investigation as humanly possible, that the charges of the critics are without serious foundation, and that further speculative discussion only plays into the hands of the opposition. Point out also that parts of the conspiracy talk appear to be deliberately generated by Communist propagandists. Urge them to use their influence to discourage unfounded and irresponsible speculation.

b. To employ propaganda assets to [negate] and refute the attacks of the critics. Book reviews and feature articles are particularly appropriate for this purpose. The unclassified attachments to this guidance should provide useful background material for passing to assets. Our ploy should point out, as applicable, that the critics are (I) wedded to theories adopted before the evidence was in, (II) politically interested, (III) financially interested, (IV) hasty and inaccurate in their research, or (V) infatuated with their own theories. In the course of discussions of the whole phenomenon of criticism, a useful strategy may be to single out Epstein's theory for attack, using the attached Fletcher [?] article and Spectator piece for background. (Although Mark Lane's book is much less convincing that Epstein's and comes off badly where confronted by knowledgeable critics, it is also much more difficult to answer as a whole, as one becomes lost in a morass of unrelated details.)

4. In private to media discussions not directed at any particular writer, or in attacking publications which may be yet forthcoming, the following arguments should be useful:

a. No significant new evidence has emerged which the Commission did not consider. The assassination is sometimes compared (e.g., by Joachim Joesten and Bertrand Russell) with the Dreyfus case; however, unlike that case, the attack on the Warren Commission have produced no new evidence, no new culprits have been convincingly identified, and there is no agreement among the critics. (A better parallel, though an imperfect one, might be with the Reichstag fire of 1933, which some competent historians (Fritz Tobias, AJ.P. Taylor, D.C. Watt) now believe was set by Vander Lubbe on his own initiative, without acting for either Nazis or Communists; the Nazis tried to pin the blame on the Communists, but the latter have been more successful in convincing the world that the Nazis were to blame.)

b. Critics usually overvalue particular items and ignore others. They tend to place more emphasis on the recollections of individual witnesses (which are less reliable and more divergent--and hence offer more hand-holds for criticism) and less on ballistics, autopsy, and photographic evidence. A close examination of the Commission's records will usually show that the conflicting eyewitness accounts are quoted out of context, or were discarded by the Commission for good and sufficient reason.

c. Conspiracy on the large scale often suggested would be impossible to conceal in the United States, esp. since informants could expect to receive large royalties, etc. Note that Robert Kennedy, Attorney General at the time and John F. Kennedy's brother, would be the last man to overlook or conceal any conspiracy. And as one reviewer pointed out, Congressman Gerald R. Ford would hardly have held his tongue for the sake of the Democratic administration, and Senator Russell would have had every political interest in exposing any misdeeds on the part of Chief Justice Warren. A conspirator moreover would hardly choose a location for a shooting where so much depended on conditions beyond his control: the route, the speed of the cars, the moving target, the risk that the assassin would be discovered. A group of wealthy conspirators could have arranged much more secure conditions.

d. Critics have often been enticed by a form of intellectual pride: they light on some theory and fall in love with it; they also scoff at the Commission because it did not always answer every question with a flat decision one way or the other. Actually, the make-up of the Commission and its staff was an excellent safeguard against over-commitment to any one theory, or against the illicit transformation of probabilities into certainties.

e. Oswald would not have been any sensible person's choice for a co-conspirator. He was a "loner," mixed up, of questionable reliability and an unknown quantity to any professional intelligence service. [Archivist's note: This claim is demonstrably untrue with the latest file releases. The CIA had an operational interest in Oswald less than a month before the assassination. Source: Oswald and the CIA, John Newman and newly released files from the National Archives.]

f. As to charges that the Commission's report was a rush job, it emerged three months after the deadline originally set. But to the degree that the Commission tried to speed up its reporting, this was largely due to the pressure of irresponsible speculation already appearing, in some cases coming from the same critics who, refusing to admit their errors, are now putting out new criticisms.

g. Such vague accusations as that "more than ten people have died mysteriously" can always be explained in some natural way e.g.: the individuals concerned have for the most part died of natural causes; the Commission staff questioned 418 witnesses (the FBI interviewed far more people, conduction 25,000 interviews and re interviews), and in such a large group, a certain number of deaths are to be expected. (When Penn Jones, one of the originators of the "ten mysterious deaths" line, appeared on television, it emerged that two of the deaths on his list were from heart attacks, one from cancer, one was from a head-on collision on a bridge, and one occurred when a driver drifted into a bridge abutment.)

5. Where possible, counter speculation by encouraging reference to the Commission's Report itself. Open-minded foreign readers should still be impressed by the care, thoroughness, objectivity and speed with which the Commission worked. Reviewers of other books might be encouraged to add to their account the idea that, checking back with the report itself, they found it far superior to the work of its critics.

What's sad is that, even when the CIA admits publicly (they never denied this was their document when it first surfaced) that they've used book reviews to attempt to shape the debate in their favor, editors at major publications can still be played for suckers. That's assuming, of course, that they are not recipients of these instructions themselves.

What makes this so interesting to me as an historian is that both the CIA/Bugliosi line and your approach are reasonably sound evidentiary standards: M. E. Berry (Culture of Civil War in Kyoto) refers to them as the "soft" and "hard" readings, both plausible and internally consistent, but with very different implications.

Interesting indeed

I've only just scratched the surface. Bugliosi's misrepresentations make his work less than a work of history, and more a work of propaganda. But it's going to take months to make that point, and I don't feel the need to rush on that account.

The interesting thing about the "hard" and "soft" readings is that they can't really both be true: what you need is an overarching argument and overwhelming evidence to break the epistemological logjam. The CIA arguments, which Bugliosi seems to be following, represent a fairly extreme version of the "soft" reading: it shouldn't take too much to break through.....

Well, and of course...

...for those of us who have been researching this for years, Bugliosi's attempt is akin to Pandora trying to put the ills she unleashed into the world back into the box!

Your first comment is very important. These are dramatically different views of history - and it really does matter very much which is correct. Because if the JFK story put forth by the media and people like Bugliosi is false, what does that mean for our democracy, which depends on an honestly educated electorate??

The Warren Disinformation Comission

This is a review (below) from his (Vincent Bugliosi) JFK book, I thought that Vincent said if you start from a false premise then the entire version is incorrect.

"There have been hundreds of books about the assassination, but there has never been a book that covers the entire case, including addressing each and every conspiracy theory and the facts, or alleged facts, on which they are based. In this monumental work, the author has raised scholarship on the assassination to a new and final level, one that far surpasses all other books on the subject. It adds resonance, depth, and closure to the admirable work of the Warren Commission."

Lets read what it said:

[Released November 30, 1963. Dated November 29, 1963]

PURSUANT to the authority vested in me as President of the United States, I hereby appoint a Commission to ascertain, evaluate, and report upon the facts relating to the assassination of the late President John F. Kennedy and the subsequent violent death of the man charged with the assassination. The Commission shall consist of--

The Chief Justice of the United States, Chairman;

Senator Richard B. Russell;.......................(Under investigation by JFK)
Senator John Sherman Cooper;
Congressman Hale Boggs;
Congressman Gerald R. Ford;
The Honorable Alien W. Dulles;...............(Under investigation by JFK)
The Honorable John J. McCloy................(Under investigation by JFK)

The purposes of the Commission are to examine the evidence developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and any additional evidence that may hereafter come to light or be uncovered by Federal or State authorities; to make such further investigation as the Commission finds desirable; to evaluate all the facts and circumstances surrounding such assassination, including the subsequent violent death of the man charged with the assassination, and to report to me its findings and conclusions.

The Commission is empowered to prescribe its own procedures and to employ such assistants as it deems necessary.

Necessary expenses of the Commission may be paid from the "Emergency Fund for the President."

All Executive departments and agencies are directed to furnish the Commission with such facilities, services, and cooperation as it may request from time to time.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON ...........................(Under investigation by JFK)
THE WHITE HOUSE
November 29, 1963

On December 3, 1963, the UPI wire carried a story ... under the following lead: "An exhaustive FBI report now nearly ready for the White House will indicate that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone and unaided assassin of President Kennedy, Government sources said today." When he was informed of these news articles. Director Hoover wrote, "I thought no one knew this outside the FBI." According to (Assistant FBI Director) William Sullivan, Hoover himself ordered the report "leaked" to the press, in an attempt to "blunt the drive for an independent investigation of the assassination."

So how can you have an investigation with the FBI in charge of the investigation and the director of the FBI has already concluded it was Oswald before the investigation even starts? I would say that is the definition of a false premise.

Think about it.

As Americans we should demand a through investigation regardless of where it ends up.

This is the method the United States Government applies to get away with crimes on their citizens. JFK and 9/11 are very similar in the operational function used by internal cabals in our government used to change the direction of our Country. The book below just keeps repeating the disinformation created by the Warren Commission. Look at the structure of the origin of the 9/11 commission and it is almost exactly the same method used after JFK's execution.

Both Commissions really never went into intense investigations surrounding the entire scope of the crime and crime scenes. By implementing both of the commissions' directives within the written executive orders by two presidents; they both leave out a through investigation. Both the commissions' hands are tided and start with false foundation. The commissions' are instructed to begin from the known false premise and expound the disinformation.

As taxpayers we should demand a through investigations regardless where it ends up on both matters.

An interesting precedent to both

I don't know if anyone here as read Kati Marton's excellent book "The Polk Conspiracy", about the strange death of journalist George Polk, for whom the most prestigious investigative journalism award is named.
I want to post about that story someday too. It even includes a Ruth Paine type character...!

Thanks so much for doing this, Real History Lisa

I haven't had time to read your whole essay, but I skimmed it, and I will read the whole thing when I get a chance.

I was very suspicious from the first, when I noted the shallow, triumphalist tone of the review in the LA Times.

Great work.

De nada.

Love your Seldes quote. Seldes is brilliant. It was when I started learning a little economic history that I started finding it easier to figure out many of history's "problems."

Interesting Site

This is an interesting site. I'm glad I found it. I hope I'm posting properly.
I agree that the Bugliosi book is a fake presentation, a dishonest pose of "honesty." I browsed through it for an hour to come to that conclusion. My own cursory take on the book is at www.ulareview.blogspot.com, if anyone is interested. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Ignoring Joseph Dolce

Any discussion of the single bullet theory needs to include the views and research of Dr. Joseph Dolce. Chief the Wounds Ballistic Division of the Army, Dolce was to be called whenever a VIP was shot. The Warren Commission lawyers consulted him. He told them flat out, the single bullet theory is wrong on April 21, 1964.

Then he was given Oswald's ammo and shot human cadaver wrists and in every instance the bullets were severely deformed, even at low velocity.
The report, compiled by several of ballistics officials was never published by the Commission and unavailable for eight years after the Warren Report came out.

Dolce's devastating critique is available on the award winning documentary, Reasonable Doubt.

Bugliois relegates this man, Dr. Dolce, to a footnote on the CD.

There are many, many examples like this in his book. Other examples include how he treats Carolyn Arnold's statement and Jack Dougherty's testimony.

It is a one sided prosecutor's brief, not unlike Posner's attempt, the House Select Committee, and the original Warren study.

All four fail in trying to make the facts fit a theory, a procrustean bed approach to explaining the event.

A not so smoking gun

Oswald 'had no time to fire all Kennedy bullets'
By Tim Shipman in Washington, Sunday Telegraph

The official Warren Commission inquiry into the shooting concluded the following year that Oswald was a lone gunman who fired three shots with a Carcano M91/38 bolt-action rifle in 8.3 seconds.

But when the Italian team test-fired the identical model of gun, they were unable to load and fire three shots in less than 19 seconds - suggesting that a second gunman must have been present in Dealey Plaza, central Dallas, that day.

Two of the bullets hit Kennedy, with the first - the so called "magic bullet", ridiculed by conspiracy theorists - also wounding the governor of Texas, John B Connally, after it had struck the president.

In a further challenge to the official conclusions, the Italian team conducted two other tests at the former Carcano factory in Terni, north of Rome, where the murder weapon was made in 1940.

They fired bullets through two large pieces of meat, in an attempt to simulate the assumed path of the magic bullet. In their test, the bullet was deformed, unlike the first bullet in the Kennedy assassination, which remained largely intact.

The second bullet is thought to have missed its target. According to the commission, the third disintegrated when it hit Kennedy's head. The new research suggests, however, that this is incompatible with the fact that Oswald was only 80 yards away, in a book depository, when he fired. The Italian tests suggest that a bullet fired from that distance would have emerged intact from Kennedy's head, implying that the third shot must instead have come from a more distant location.

Secret France-Libya Arms Transfers?

AP, August 1, 2007
Report: Gadhafi son says French arms deal key to medics' release; Sarkozy denies deal

PARIS: The son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi said a deal to buy military hardware from France was a key element of negotiations that led to the release of six medics detained in Libya, the daily Le Monde said Wednesday.

But President Nicolas Sarkozy said no armament deals were concluded with Libya. The Foreign Ministry refused to comment.

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi also was quoted by Le Monde as saying an agreement for France to intervene militarily to defend Libya from security threats had also been on the negotiating table, but he was not sure it had figured into the final deal.

Under an accord partially brokered by French first lady Cecilia Sarkozy and EU officials, Libya released the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor on July 24. The medics, who had spent 8 1/2 years in prison, faced life sentences on charges they deliberately infected hundreds of children with the AIDS virus — an allegation they denied.

French officials have provided few details about the accord, but Seif al-Islam Gadhafi claimed it included the sale of French Milan anti-tank missiles for an estimated €100 million (US$137 million) and a deal on the joint Franco-Libyan manufacture of military equipment, according to Le Monde. It also included an agreement to conduct joint military exercises, he was quoted as saying, adding it was Libya's first military deal with a Western nation.

Sarkozy replied with a brusque "no" when reporters asked on Wednesday if any armament deals were concluded with Libya. When pressed about any such agreement in exchange for the medical workers' freedom, he said simply "none."

David Martinon, his spokesman, in a fuller reply later, said: "There was no armaments contract signed during the visit of Nicolas Sarkozy to Libya."

The Foreign Ministry had no comment.

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi — who heads the Gadhafi International Foundation for Charity Associations and was a key player in the negotiations — said the possibility of the security agreement had also been under discussion.

"But I'm not sure if that article was maintained in the (final) document," he was quoted as saying.

Libya — long considered a pariah state for its involvement in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland — has been attempting to end its isolation.

In 2003, it accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing, which killed 270 people, and agreed to pay restitution to the victims' families. The Libyan leader also announced he was dismantling his nuclear weapons program, which led to the lifting of U.S. and European sanctions against the country.

The release of the medics removed the last major obstacle to Libya's rejoining the international community.

Sarkozy was quick to renew ties with the oil-rich nation, traveling to the capital, Tripoli, for talks with Moammar Gadhafi the day after the medics were returned to Bulgaria on a French presidential plane.

Following the meeting, Sarkozy announced an initial agreement to sell Libya a nuclear-powered plant. Sarkozy said the civilian nuclear technology would be used to desalinate sea water.

In the Le Monde interview, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi did not mention the planned desalination plant. He said that nuclear technology would allow Libya to export energy — possibly to Italy.

Re: Theresa Duncan's "Suicide": Always Fall for the Shallow Cover Stories to Maintain a Life of Illusion

We've gotten so used to thin, contradictory cover stories for certain "suicides," or political murders, that the press and blogs rush in to eulogize on the "reasons for Theresa Duncan's suicide" before it has even been ruled a "suicide."

And the CIA's perception managers on the Net know how to slip in a belief - take it as a given. Discuss the "suicide," and soon everyone will take it for granted without giving it a second thought. Media-programmed proles - uncomfortable with thinking for themselves - follow suit. Must be a "suicide." Let's sentimentalize with a mascara-stained Tammy Faye Baker impression ...

Always excuse political murder, allow the CIA to kill anyone of us, con us, because if we have to face reality ... why, this frail little mortal quisling nervous system couldn't take it. Let's live out the next "suicide" lie and revile anyone who says otherwise. Spit on the Constantines.

I'll just move away to a country of one and live in reality.

Where did all the flags go?

You-all can have the Fox News/CNN version of reality, spit on those who are fighting for your rights, proselatyze over the "suicides" and "lone nut" murders ... as a substitute for intelligence.

Many bloggers are, in a metaphorical sense, my children. They learned about the world, in some part, from me. Theresa Duncan was one of them, and I know this after reading her blog. I will not call her death a "suicide" until I know it as a fact.

After the Ambulances Go

"Imagination and fiction make up more than three quarters of our real life." - Simone Weil

The image above was posted by Theresa Duncan on her eclectic blog The Wit of the Staircase, July 10. Later that day, Theresa's boyfriend of 12 years, Jeremy Blake, discovered her body in their East Village apartment, an evident suicide. ("A bottle of pills and alcohol were found near Duncan's body [and] she left a suicide note saying that she was at peace with her decision and loved Blake and her family deeply.") A week later, a man was seen walking into the ocean at Rockaway Park, and not walking out. Blake's wallet and clothing, and his suicide note, were found beneath the boardwalk.

Duncan and Blake were both career artists and filmmakers. Theresa was also a game designer, a culture critic and a reader of this blog. "Paranoia seems to us an absolute patriotic duty at the moment," she wrote a year ago, "and Rigorous Intuition is like the incredibly symbolically twisted and bizarre dream you wake up from to realize that the scenario thrown up from the unconscious is actually the expression of some very simple truth you had been desperate to avoid facing." It was last May that Theresa faced hers, and posted "The Trouble with Anna Gaskell," in which she described an ongoing campaign of harassment against herself and Jeremy, and the long shadow cast by Des Moines' businessman Jim Cownie, "a major Republican donor with ties to the Midwest's Heritage Groups, founded by the ultraconservative Adolph Coors."

Cownie became the legal guardian of New York-based artist Gaskell and her siblings following the early deaths of her parents (her father was Cownie's business partner). While an undergraduate she dated Jeremy Blake for about a year. It was during that time that Blake got to know Cownie as well.

Cownie has an oddly vast collection of firearms--an entire out building devoted to them in fact.... Then there were the mobster "friends" in Las Vegas who comped Mr. Wit [Jeremy] and Ms. Gaskell with an eye roll and a groan when they mentioned Cownie's name at the front desk, as he had instructed them to do. In addition to the Gaskell orphans, Cownie has four or five children of his own. The oldest male Cownie child, then a teenager, even bragged to Mr. Wit during one visit "My Dad's going to get me in the CIA!"

Once the harassment of The Wits [Jeremy and Theresa] began, these disparate old Anna Gaskell anecdotes, which up to the late summer of 2006 had been completely unknown to me, began to suddenly bob up in Mr. Wit's memory. Mr. Wit's recollection was further jarred after we repeatedly witnessed Ms. Gaskell's brother Zach mysteriously pacing in front of our Venice California home. Then there were the many cars with Iowa license plates following us around Los Angeles at the time. (We took photos of these, naturally.) Mr. Wit during this time also suddenly remembered that busy Cownie often travelled to South Dakota to attend some of the Midwest's more unsavory biker rallies. But I guess being friends with ex-con bikers and Vegas mobsters doesn't necessarily point to somebody who would, like, hire thugs to harass, threaten or--wow--maybe even kill people.

...

To add the final dessert topping to this apocalyptic art world sundae, Mr. Wit says that normally dour Cownie frequently made jokes about child molestation as a "training" tool. This wouldn't be so fucking spooky, friends of the Staircase, if Des Moines wasn't the land of the Project Monarch/U.S. Intelligence rumored disappearance of Johnny Gosch and the odd resemblance of poor little Johnny to Bush White House gay hooker-psychological operative Jeff Gannon.

She concludes with advice for Anna Gaskell: "Stop accepting payoffs from Cownie immediately, get your younger brothers away from him, get a lawyer using only your own money, and have the lawyer get Cownie to answer a few questions about your mother and father."

When news of the deaths of Duncan and Blake were posted on Metafilter, a clue to the cause of their presumed suicides was Theresa's "paranoid screed," in which many of the "bugbears of the psy-ops crowd were put on Duncan's mental merry-go-round and given a real strong spin." The words "psy-ops crowd" were linked to the RI forum.

I don't know how I could begin assessing from here, tonight, the merits of Duncan's story and the legitimacy of the verdict of suicide. I do know it would be indecent to try. We enjoy mysteries. We even revel in the great mysteries that may mean either our destiny or our doom. But God help us if we become a mystery. And I don't want to make one now of Theresa Duncan.

I've known people who've had dead cats hung at their doorstep; who've been poisoned and burgled, and received death threats all because of the work they do and the privileged interests they challenge. I know they're not making shit up, because I know them. But if you didn't know them, to hear them talk sometimes, you might want to think they were. Because maybe it would be better if they were a little deluded than that they were describing the world. Even if you did know them, for their sakes you might want to think so, too.

But both harassment and the delusion of harassment are real, and a paranoid screed can also be one's patriotic duty. Murders and suicides happen all the time, as do murders that mimic suicide, and less frequently the reverse. Advocating for justice and truth and a closure to mystery does not mean forever contending that death must come by another hand. And sometimes we ought to be adamant that we simply don't know.

Two days before her death, on Sunday, July 8, Duncan wrote that she had another political essay in the works and would post it later. She'd entitled it, "The Devil and Dick Cheney." What would she have said? We don't know.

Did you read her blog entry of July 5, 2007, "Citizen Wit and Project Monarch"? When I saw that, it gave me chills.

Quote:

"So it must be clear by now, children of the Staircase, that MK-ULTRA (and even weird, disinfo-saturated Project Monarch) are the ne plus ultra weapons of past decades, as if all the Cold War missile paranoia was just a smoke screen for all the body snatchers the Pentagon was beginning to hatch.

Mind control and psychological warfare are the primary weapons that led to our current Monarch Moment. Cults like Scientology and mind control-manufactured Monarch girlies and Operation Mockingbird are the fungus among us that has been eating away at the foundations of democracy for decades....

King Bush? Emperor Cheney? They don't call it Monarch for nothin'."

The Trouble With Anna Gaskell

Gaskell_3

Jim_cownieChildren of the Staircase, meet Jim Cownie, above, also known as Des Moines-born, New York local artist Anna Gaskell's (top) legal guardian after the odd and unhappy coincidences of each of her parent's separate sudden deaths.

This would be regrettable, but of no personal consequence to The Wit Of The Staircase if it had not been for the extremely coordinated and professional physical and psychological harassment Mr. Wit Of The Staircase and I underwent subsequent to Mr. Wit creating an artwork entitled Winchester, a video trilogy based on the violence and guilt in the life of gun-company heiress Sarah Winchester and her subsequent neurotic construction of a house of endless new wings and rooms and doors and stairways meant to accommodate the ghosts of the victims of her family's dangerous product.

The harassment Mr. Wit and I are still enduring featured as its centerpiece an FBI file I earned as an undergrad in Detroit for protesting the plant closings there and doing other labor organizing. I also wrote several eloquent articles for Wayne State University's student newspaper demanding a Federal investigation into the Iran-Contra cover up when I was a freshman.

Wit's family has generations of working class factory workers on my father's side, and generations of academic specialists in radical political movements on my mother's side. My mother, who currently works at Wayne State University and has a PhD in politcal science that is focused on Black Panther and other radical movements in the Midwest, also recently received harassing phone calls, as did my younger brother.

On the other hand Mr. Cownie--who built a wing on his Des Moines, Iowa home to house the orphaned Anna Gaskell and her younger brothers Jon, Jake, and Zach after their parents' untimely demise--is very generous in looking after his former business partner John Gaskell's children. He recently devoted $1.5 million to build a sports complex in Des Moines (named after himself, naturally) and gave $50,000 to the Des Moines Art Museum after that institution declined to fund a work that Anna Gaskell, who is also an artist like Mr. Wit, has been lobbying to permanently install there.

In addition to this community largesse, Cownie is a major Republican donor with ties to the Midwest's Heritage Groups, founded by the ultraconservative Adolph Coors with money from his brainchild The Heritage Foundation. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Heritage Foundation's support for the Nicaraguan contras and Angola's Savimbi proved extremely influential with the United States government, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Council and other governmental agencies. The Heritage Foundation presented its case for armed support for these movements, and United States support soon followed.

According to this website at media transparency.org, "among other Heritage efforts have been the publications Beware of the Union Label, The Case for Plant Closures, Upsetting the Balance of U.S. Labor Law: The Striker Replacement Bill and In Praise of Corporate Radiers: Junking Three Fallacies About Hostile Takeovers.

The site further reports: "The U.S. labor movement is a particular target for Heritage. Ronald Reagan's first appointment to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) was Robert Hunter, a conservative activist who wrote the chapter on the Labor Department for the foundation's 'Mandate for Leadership.' In that paper, Hunter called for increasing the use of NLRB injunctions against unions, gutting the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and drastically cutting the Bureau of Labor Statistics."

Mr. Cownie is such an admirer of the Heritage Foundation's political program that he apparently went so far as to name the company from which his mysterious fortune emanates "Heritage Communications." Despite Mr. Cownie's funding of Anna Gaskell's Des Moines Museum vanity project and his keen interest in Mr. Wit's Winchester Series, he and now most of the younger male members of his family are professionally devoted to using Homeland Security pork to overturn decades of social progress and subverting values that the art coummunity struggles to represent and uphold. For example, author Russ Bellant states in his book The Coors Connection that The Heritage Groups "will continue to be a key element in the phalanx of rightist groups with an agenda of austerity for the poor, hostility to minorities and women, upward distribution of wealth for the rich, economic domination of the Third World, with repression and bloodletting for those who rebel.”

In addition to his business bona fides, Cownie also has a more colorful side behind the cryptic Bruce Wayneian businessman front. According to Mr. Wit of the Staircase, aka artist Jeremy Blake, (who briefly dated Ms. Gaskell for a year or so as an undergrad in art school and who as such was more than once a personal guest of Mr. Cownie's in the early 1990s) Jim Cownie has an oddly vast collection of firearms--an entire out building devoted to them in fact. Mr. Cownie also had a Hummer in 1992, way before they were a common sight. Then there were the mobster "friends" in Las Vegas who comped Mr. Wit and Ms.

Once the harassment of The Wits began, these disparate old Anna Gaskell anecdotes, which up to the late summer of 2006 had been completely unknown to me, began to suddenly bob up in Mr.

Much of the harassment of me and Mr. Wit was also conducted by the Church Of Scientology in L. A., who Cownie also no doubt also "does business with." U.S. Intelligence "black ops" and "psy ops" have long relied on (or just outright invented) religious cults (including the Manson Family--Charles Manson received 150 hours of in-prison Scientology "auditing"), biker gangs, and the like in Federal Counterintelligence prorgrams in order to disrupt the counterculture since the 1960s. Read more about the CIA and cults here and couch jumping, Katie kidnapping mind controlled movie star Tom Crusie's meeting with Scooter Libby and State Department head Richard Armitage here.

While this ongoing illegal harassment of Wit using Federal employees (or their "cut-out" counterparts) and Federal funding (your Homeland Security tax dollars at work!) is meant to deprive us of work and our livelihoods and even sanity, the harassment also has a curious sexual focus on Wit that mirrors this J. Edgar Hoover campaign against Black Panther organizer and actress Jean Seberg.

Like the Federal "Cointelpro" campaign that deliberately drove Seberg to suicide, the smear campaign against Wit and Mr. Wit uses as its basis pre-existing, completely invented smears started by married art professor Ralph Rugoff and his student girlfriend Hilary Chartrand in order to cover up their 2000 affair while both worked at the California College of Arts And Crafts. This is something that sharp-eyed Wit accidentally discovered during one particularly dreary art dinner in November of that year. Hilary Chartrand is friends with Anna Gaskell, who is also known for carrying on affairs with her married professors in order to have access to ethics-challenged art world log rollers like NY Times critic Roberta Smith and her husband Jerry Saltz. (See article below.)

Anyway, Ms. Gaskell and I don't seem to have much in common besides her very brief intersection with the life of Jeremy Blake, a period about which Mr. Wit says "She was so dumb, so arrogant and so mysteriously smug. She really thought she had some sort of advantage in every situation. I could never, ever figure out where that came from, because it sure wasn't coming from anything she did. But I guess now I know.")

This is a pretty ugly set of circumstances, and a weirder true tale than even Wit usually presents. But, as usual from what I hear, Ms. Gaskell has gotten somebody else to do the work of articulating and then cleaning up her mental messes for her. If you're reading this, Anna, here's some free advice: Stop accepting payoffs from Cownie immediately, get your younger brothers away from him, get a lawyer using only your own money, and have the lawyer get Cownie to answer a few questions about your mother and father.

If I were you, I'd even take a job in a factory in order to do it.

At this link below are the members of the board of one of the many oddly nondescript companies Cownie is linked with. It looks like a roll call of the unsavories from "Lumberton" in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Wexford & James LLC.

U.S. broke rules for Salvadoran detainees, judge says

The decision upholds a 1988 injunction mandating that immigrants be advised of their rights to asylum and legal representation.

Los Angeles Times, August 1, 2007
Anna Gorman

The U.S. government has violated its own immigrant detention standards, denying some Salvadoran detainees access to legal materials, telephones and attorney visits, a federal judge in Los Angeles has ruled.

District Judge Margaret M. Morrow upheld a 1988 injunction mandating that Salvadorans be advised of their rights to apply for political asylum and have access to legal representation.

In her July 26 decision, Morrow ruled that because detention standards weren't always followed, the injunction must remain in place so Salvadorans could "exercise their right to apply for asylum freely and intelligently."

Although the case was filed on behalf of Salvadorans fleeing civil war in the 1980s, the injunction — and the recent ruling — affects all detained immigrants by highlighting the problems that exist at holding facilities across the nation.

"The government needs to do more to ensure that detained immigrants have basic rights to due process," said American Civil Liberties Union attorney Ranjana Natarajan, one of the lead attorneys for the plaintiffs.

The Department of Justice plans to appeal the decision.

"We are disappointed that the court continues to refuse to end a long-standing and unnecessary injunction," Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said in a prepared statement. "The civil war in El Salvador ended several years ago. Circumstances there that were the basis for the injunction no longer exist."

Knocke said that U.S. border security was more critical than ever in a post-9/11 world.

The federal injunction was issued nearly two decades ago after Salvadoran refugees accused the former Immigration and Naturalization Service of using threats and coercion to discourage them from applying for asylum.

In 2005, the Department of Justice filed a motion to end the injunction, arguing that the government had adopted procedures to ensure that detainees weren't coerced into giving up their rights. The department also argued that the situation in El Salvador had changed significantly and that Salvadoran immigrants did not deserve special treatment.

Government attorneys said the injunction interfered with its expedited removal program, which allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport certain illegal immigrants without hearings.

But immigrant advocates argue that many Salvadorans still have valid asylum claims and need to be informed of their rights.

"The injunction was not only based on the war in El Salvador but also on the treatment of people with valid asylum claims by the immigration authorities," said Linton Joaquin, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, and one of the lead attorneys on the case.

Joaquin also argued that the injunction needed to continue because the detention standards that the government enacted were not enforceable — and were routinely ignored.

"There are violations all over the place," he said.

In the decision, Morrow referred to reports by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the United Nations and the American Bar Assn. about detention conditions. She concluded that the government's analysis "understated — perhaps severely — violations of the standards at the various detention centers."

Morrow wrote that the government adopted new regulations to ensure that immigrants weren't deported unless they understood their right to asylum, but authorities didn't always follow those regulations. She cited one study showing that fewer than 10% of immigrants at the San Ysidro port of entry were advised of their right to apply for asylum.

The judge also noted that some centers lacked computers or had outdated or missing legal materials. At others, the phones were out of service for long periods of time or the calls were cut off abruptly.

On one day in April 2005 at a San Diego facility, for example, 13 of the 60 phones in the detainee visitor area did not work. And even though the government's detention standards required facilities provide private rooms for legal visits, that did not always happen.

Luis A. Hernandez of the Assn. of Salvadorans of Los Angeles said he was pleased by the ruling. There is not a civil war anymore, but Salvadorans continue to flee the country for their safety — often because of gang violence, he said.

Fighting Fox's influence
How to counter Rupert Murdoch's pillaging of the press
By: Andrew Austin
8/1/07

The New York Post was created in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton (he's the guy on the ten-dollar bill) and is the country's oldest daily newspaper. Formerly a bastion of liberal journalism, the paper was purchased by Rupert Murdoch in 1976, at which point it ceased being a newspaper. The Post essentially became a tabloid, littered with so much sensationalism and bias that by 1980 the Columbia Journalism Review described it as " … no longer merely a journalistic problem. It is a social problem - a force of evil."

Recent headlines run by the Post include a premature declaration of "BUSH WINS!" across the cover while the 2000 election was still in dispute and articles repeatedly referring to senator and 2008 presidential candidate Barack Obama as "Osama (Bin Laden)" - something that could easily be confused aside from the blatant reality that one is a first name and the other is a last name.

But this happened before. Years earlier, Murdoch purchased England's The Sun, giving the newspaper a sensationalist and jingoistic tone. Probably the most egregious sign of the paper's perversion of the press was when editorial content was pushed back to make room for daily photos of topless girls on page 3. A tradition proudly continued to this day.

Recent mutilations of the media at Murdoch's News Corp. include leaked internal memos at Fox News instructing anchors on which way to slant the news and censorship within the company's popular social networking site regulating the use of presidential candidate Ron Paul's name. You may have heard of the website, it's called MySpace.

So why the history lesson? Well, News Corp. yesterday finalized a deal to buy out Dow Jones, the company that publishes The Wall Street Journal. To reiterate, the most economically influential paper in the world has been purchased by same company that owns Fox News.

The intent behind the takeover is widely rumored to change the paper into a right-wing opposition to The New York Times, although News Corp. states the takeover is strictly business-related. Murdoch's claims of not meddling with the The Wall Street Journal echo similar ones during his takeover of the Post, which was abruptly changed within a year of Murdoch's arrival.

The danger of The Wall Street Journal falling into the hands of Murdoch cannot be understated. The paper is the go-to source for the most financially influential people in the nation; it boasts a circulation of 2,062,312, of which the average household net worth is approximately $2.1 million.

This takeover doesn't just pose a threat to the financial landscape of the U.S., it essentially destabilizes the institution of capitalism.

In the past Murdoch has used his media outlets to oppose companies in competition with News Corp., endorse or oppose political candidates and to outright change the news. Why would he stop now?

The harsh reality is that there is no toppling News Corp. Murdoch's assets and influence are far reaching and range from companies like DirecTV and HarperCollins Publishers, down to smaller outlets like the Fiji Times and Jamaba!, the culprits behind the annoying Crazy Frog ringtones. However, there is a way that you, average Joe-Bob (or Jane-Bob) consumer can bring about change.

Like all things ending in "corp.," News Corp. is profit-driven. Their bottom line is what matters most, and consumer opposition to the Murdoch Empire could influence the company's board of directors to seek a new direction (and maybe even a new CEO).

News Corp. products saturate every facet of media, but first thing first: turning off Fox.

Pass on 20th Century Fox movies, and turn the dial away from channels like FOX network, Fox News, FX, Fox Sports - even the SPEED Channel and the National Geographic Channel. Just don't watch it. If you absolutely have to catch the next episode of "Rescue Me," or desperately need to watch the "The Simpsons Movie," find alternative means. Record the shows and skip the commercials, or when you're at the Cineplex, instead of forking over money for "The Simpsons Movie," buy a ticket to "Hairspray" and accidentally stumble into the wrong theater. You get to watch the movie you want without the guilt and John Travolta gets to feel good about dressing up as a middle-aged woman.

It may be easy to avoid Stephen F. Hayes' hagiography, "Cheney" (although I would like to see how he explains a man-size safe in the vice president's office), but new prints of Pulitzer Prize winners like "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "The Old Man and The Sea" are only available through HarperCollins. You're in luck, there's an alternative called the library, where readers can borrow hardcover editions of these same books for free.

The real vice for most is college students is MySpace. Although other social networks like Facebook and Friendster are out there, it maybe tough to outright delete your MySpace profile. However, you can avoid clicking on banner ads (usually promoting Fox shows) and refrain from befriending stuff like commercial products that pay for featured profiles. Seventeen magazine is a magazine, is not alive and is not your friend.

There's a reason Murdoch's name sounds so cryptic and "to baffle or deceive" is a second definition for the word "fox." The man is so devoted to right-wing politics he cleared out the 34th-floor penthouse of Fox headquarters in Los Angeles for President Ronald Reagan to use as an office after he left the White House.

The purchase of The Wall Street Journal puts News Corp. one giant leap closer toward a media monopoly. Following the release of the Fox Business Channel in October, the Murdoch is speculated to be interested in buying up Yahoo!. Though the term "media monopoly" may not sound incredibly menacing, this is the Information Age. How would you feel about one person controlling all the information?

Shrill, Mud-Slinging Public Disgrace Vincent Bugliosi Fakes Photo Evidence and Distorts Eye-Witness Testimony

http://books.beloblog.com/archives/2007/05/vincent_bugliosi_1.html
Pat Speer | May 22, 2007

... There is also a question of Bugliosi's honesty. ... In the text Bugliosi refers to the single bullet theory as occurring at a point consistent with when most believe Connally was shot, frame 224. But he shows a Warren Commission photograph taken at the car's position at frame 210 to demonstrate that Kennedy and Connally are in alignment. When one looks at the alignment of Kennedy and Connally at frame 225 contained within the Warren Commission's exhibits (and as seen in Part 2 of the research video series at patspeer.com) one can see that Kennedy and Connally are NOT in alignment. From this it seems clear he's pulled a switcheroo and is being deliberately deceptive. (He may think he's being honest by stating that the single-bullet theory shot was "somewhere around frame 210" and that the shot occurred "within a split second for frame 210" but if he'd caught a "conspiracy theorist" pulling this trick he'd nail 'em, and deservedly so.)

At another point, where he's trying to make the case that Oswald never came down for lunch, he mentions that a Secret Service Report on an interview with Oswald's boss Billy Shelley said he saw Oswald at about 11:50 on the first floor and he appeared to be going about his normal duties. He then argues that this must have been earlier in the day BEFORE Shelley and the crew came down from the sixth floor to go to lunch. He mentions that Eddie Piper also said he saw Oswald around noon but neglects to tell his readers that Piper specifically mentioned that Oswald said he was going to eat his lunch, thereby placing this occurrence at lunchtime. He neglects as well Shelley's later testimony that Oswald was standing near the phone, and not working. Meanwhile, in the same section, Bugliosi accepts Charles Givens' testimony that he saw Oswald on the sixth floor, and dismisses the FBI report where Givens said he saw Oswald on the first floor as "hearsay." Bugliosi's acceptance of Givens' word over the FBI in this instance is not only inconsistent with his dismissal of Shelley's testimony over an earlier Secret Service Report, but probably incorrect. A February FBI report on Givens, even before he'd changed his story, detailed that Givens had had a history of drug abuse and was the kind of guy that their sources in the Dallas Police said would change his story for money. (A more detailed examination of Givens' testimony is available in chapter 4 at patspeer.com,)

While I'm still reading the book, and learning a little bit here and there, the main thing I've learned so far is that you can't trust this book!
